Working notes:
A recieved a phone call from a brother in the branch on a Friday night, asking if I could help out with some work that was being done that evening, on a retail space that he a few others manage. Unfortunately, when I recieved the call, my cell phone batter was dead, my phone was off, and I didn't get the message until later that evening - while I was at previously commmitted event.
The scenario doesn't necessarily capture what this song is actually about, but thinking about the situation, it was obvious that it didn't really matter that it was last minute on a Friday evening, and this brother was comfortable in calling me for help. Given some other circumstances, I probably would have gladly joined him.
Although we shouldn't be capitalists with a negatively connotation - taking advantage of the situation - we should be free. We're free to give donations of our "treasure"/wealth, share our money, offer our talents, and also contribute our time. Requesting/asking time from other's who have committed to this life should not make us feel uncomfortable or guilty. At the same time, we should be willing to more readily offer our time when someone needs a baby-sitter, help cutting down a tree, re-roofing, cutting the grass, shoveling a sidewalk, scheduling a morning coffee appointment to talk through some ideas, issues, or concerns, etc, etc.
Time is valueable to all, but the freedom in being willing to offer our time says - "this valueable item in my life is worth sharing with you, flexing to your needs, or sacrificing for you - because we both have a commitment to each other and to sharing a life in Christ - and that'ss worth more that the value of my time is worth to me".
